Let’s go and have a look –— how are the abandoned farmlands now?
We can see the abandoned farmlands near the tributary of Luk Tei Tong River.
Abandoned farms are not fully utilized on growing food, what even worse is its vulnerability to the invasive vine -- Mikania. Mikania is called the “Mile-a-minute Weed”, meaning that it sprawls out rapidly-- even a mile in a minute. Rapid-growing Mikania covers up other plants along its way, and cuts out the light for photosynthesis for other plants and “kill” them. By doing so, it can occupy the growing spaces.
Low-lying abandoned farmlands with ample sunlight are one of its favorite habitats. So the Mikania problem is particularly serious in many abandoned farmlands in the New Territories.
Leaves of Mikania is characterized by its heart shape with a sharp end. The leaf margin is irregularly dentate.
